What is School Direct?

School Direct is a school-based training programme where you are based in one school for your training apart from a 6 week placement after Christmas.

How long is the course?

The course is approximately 12 months.

What are my teaching expectations?

For the training route you gradually build up your teaching solo percentage and you are never left in the classroom on your own, there will always be a teacher present. For the salaried route the teaching expectations vary and you may be handed a timetable from day one.

What will I get at the end of my training?

You will qualify with a PGCE with Qualified Teacher Status and 60 Masters Level Credits.

I have a 2:2 degree classification; do I qualify for the School Direct course?

Yes we accept 2:2 and above and a third class degree is now accepted in Computer Science, Maths and Physics (providing candidates have a B grade or above at A level).

I don’t have a GCSE C grade or above in English/Maths yet, can I apply for the course and achieve these grades before I start my course?

No, you must have the C grade or above at the time of application.

Do I qualify for the School Direct Programme?

You must have a degree in a subject specialism relevant to the School Direct programme that you are applying for. Your degree must contain 50% content of the subject you wish to train to teach in. This can be evaluated through your degree transcript.

Do I qualify for a bursary? If so, how much?

All bursary information can be found following the link- https://www.gov.uk/funding-initial-teacher-training-itt

What will my salary be whilst I am in training on the salaried route?

Ultimately the salary you receive whilst you are teaching will be down to the school you are training in, so I would recommend you get in touch and ask them. You can find general salaried information using the link- https://www.gov.uk/funding-initial-teacher-training-itt

Case Studies

What trainees say about The Heath School:

“At the Heath School I didn’t feel like a trainee, I felt like a valued member of the team. Staff at the school are extremely supportive and passionate about education; there is always someone to talk to or ask for advice. At the end of my training year I was offered a job at The Heath School and am now an NQT. School Direct has allowed me to grow with the school and to become a part of the Heath family”

“School Direct offers a hands on approach to teaching training which made me feel very much involved in the day to day life of the school. I was able to observe and teach lessons with support and guidance from experienced members of staff, as well as the provision of the university. I feel that being based in the school helped me to gain the knowledge and understanding of what it is like to be a teacher and how the school runs. After completing my training at The Heath, I was offered a job! I definitely would recommend TEAM for School Direct if you’re thinking about training to become a teacher”- Jo Brennan (Teacher of Drama)

“I feel that the training received from TEAM has been highly influential on the progress I made this year during my PGCE course.  From the start of my year at The Heath I have thoroughly enjoyed the overall experience. From day one I was made to feel welcome by all the staff I met and worked with, being able to approach them for help or advice in any aspect”- James Arthur (School Direct Biology trainee)
