Vanessa MacDonald

I am an accredited inspector and regularly lead primary school inspections across the northwest for CFBt. As part of this role I analyse a range of data and how this is reflected in the other aspects of school performance; teaching and learning, behaviour and leadership and management to evaluate how effective a school is and what it could do to improve further.

In addition I am a facilitator for the NPQH, NPQSL and NPQML courses, working with a licensee in the North West. I deliver both face to face days and facilitate on online courses to support individual participants in their leadership development, supporting them in identifying how to be strategically effective.

One of my other role is as an assessor for Basic Skills Quality Mark.  I assess and evaluate school`s own self- assessment, against given criteria in relation to the development and promotion of basic skills. I also support them in identifying development areas and defining target-areas for development.  I also lead staff continuing development days on a range of different subjects for both teachers and non-teachers.

From 2003 until 2010 I was Headteacher of a very successful primary school which had consistently good results and inspections. I was proactive in driving change improving both provision and outcomes. During my Headship I was a representative of both the Schools Forum, examining  financial and budgetary decisions and  of the Schools Admission Forum. During my headship I successfully completed a secondment as a Remodelling Advisor and worked with school leaders on workforce reform and the change agenda.

As an LDA (Leadership Development Adviser) on the Tomorrow’s Heads National College programme I worked with participants from diverse backgrounds, phases and roles (including non QTS).  These regular individual coaching sessions, looked at current roles, setting priorities, exploring issues and forming action pathways.  I have facilitated learning sets and spoken at national and regional leadership schools to challenge and to develop school leaders.

My different roles require me to both listen to colleagues; to offer both challenge and support in order to improve both their own skills but primarily to have a positive impact on the performance of the organisation. I am adept at identifying areas for development whilst also enabling others to identify these and the possible actions and solutions, with my support.
