Clive HurrenClive Hurren

Clive is a former secondary Headteacher, who has 35 years’ experience of work in secondary schools. For 12 years from 2000 Clive worked as an intervention adviser for Lancashire Local Authority, specialising in intensive support for schools in difficulty and in Ofsted categories. In this role, he successfully supported 7 schools to come out of Serious Weaknesses and 6 out of Special Measures.

Clive was also SIP to several good and outstanding schools and 2 with Sixth Forms. He has conducted Headteacher appraisals for many years. He also has considerable experience of working with and developing Governors. Clive is a hugely experienced trainer with a strong track record of delivering successful whole-school, small group or individual training.Clive’s subject specialism is Modern Languages. Before returning to work in schools as a senior leader, Clive gained 10 years’ experience in advisory work for Languages, and was recognised nationally as an effective, charismatic trainer on Modern Languages.

Since 2012 Clive has been an independent consultant, supporting schools in a variety of situations, including academies, and in a variety of local authorities. He is a practising school inspector.

Clive has particular expertise in:

  • Capacity building, training, coaching and support for SLT and middle leaders in leadership, self-evaluation, school improvement planning, lesson observation, work scrutiny, the interpretation and use of data, learning walks, department reviews, Ofsted and preparation for inspection;
  • Working closely with senior and middle-leaders to enhance their performance, especially the quality and rigour of line management, monitoring and evaluation, quality assurance and development planning;
  • Intensive specialist support for schools in difficulty or in Ofsted categories, including ‘requires improvement’ schools;
  • Support in evaluating and developing Modern Languages provision;
  • Pre-Ofsted health-checks and post-inspection follow-up, including action planning andmonitoring; pre-Ofsted preparation for staff;
  • Supported self-review/audit of provision for most aspects of provision;
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of school improvement plans;
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of interventions to raise standards;
  • Assisting staff to judge lessons and the quality of teaching accurately;
  • Training and support for Governors in their school improvement role and analysis of data.
